Why does our universe contain galaxies, stars, and humans made overwhelmingly of matter, while antimatter has virtually vanished from the cosmos? In the Big Bang, matter and antimatter should have been synthesized in exactly equal quantities and completely annihilated into pure radiation. In 1967, Andrei Sakharov showed that generating a cosmic matter-antimatter asymmetry strictly requires the violation of CP symmetry (Charge Conjugation combined with Parity). In the Standard Model, all known CP violation originates from a single, irreducible complex phase in the $3 times 3$ quark mixing matrix: The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) Matrix.
1. Quark Mass Diagonalization and Flavor Mixing
In the electroweak Lagrangian, the Yukawa interactions couple the left-handed quark doublets $Q_L^i = (u_L^i, d_L^i)^T$ to the right-handed quark singlets $u_R^j, d_R^j$ through complex $3 times 3$ Yukawa coupling matrices $Y_u$ and $Y_d$:
[
mathcal{L}_{text{Yukawa}} = -Y_{ij}^u bar{Q}_L^i tilde{Phi} u_R^j – Y_{ij}^d bar{Q}_L^i Phi d_R^j + text{h.c.}
]
When the Higgs field acquires vacuum expectation value $v$, mass matrices $M_u = frac{v}{sqrt{2}} Y_u$ and $M_d = frac{v}{sqrt{2}} Y_d$ emerge. Diagonalizing these mass matrices via bi-unitary transformations ($u_L = V_u^L u_L^{text{phys}}, d_L = V_d^L d_L^{text{phys}}$) produces the physical mass eigenstates ($u, c, t$ and $d, s, b$).
While neutral currents remain strictly diagonal (the GIM Mechanism), the charged-current $W^pm$ interaction rotates by the unitary product matrix $V_{text{CKM}} equiv (V_u^L)^dagger V_d^L$:
[
mathcal{L}_{text{CC}} = -frac{g}{sqrt{2}} bar{u}_L^i gamma^mu (V_{text{CKM}})_{ij} d_L^j W_mu^+ + text{h.c.}
]
2. Parameter Counting: The Origin of the CP Phase
Why did Makoto Kobayashi and Toshihide Maskawa predict in 1973 that nature must contain at least three generations of quarks, at a time when only three quarks ($u, d, s$) were known? The answer is pure group theory:
An $N times N$ unitary matrix possesses $N^2$ real parameters. By rephasing the $2N$ quark fields ($q to e^{ialpha} q$), $2N – 1$ unphysical phases can be absorbed. The remaining independent physical parameters are:
[
N_{text{Euler Angles}} = frac{N(N-1)}{2}, quad N_{text{Physical CP Phases}} = frac{(N-1)(N-2)}{2}
]
- For $N = 2$ generations ($u, d, c, s$): 1 mixing angle (Cabibbo angle $theta_c$) and zero CP phases. CP violation is mathematically impossible!
- For $N = 3$ generations ($u, d, c, s, t, b$): 3 mixing angles and exactly one irreducible complex CP phase $delta_{CP}$!
Kobayashi and Maskawa realized that the mysterious CP violation discovered in 1964 by Christenson, Cronin, Fitch, and Turlay in neutral kaon decays required a third generation ($t$ and $b$ quarks), earning them the 2008 Nobel Prize.
3. The Wolfenstein Parametrization and Unitarity Triangles
Experimentally, the CKM matrix exhibits a pronounced hierarchical structure. Lincoln Wolfenstein expanded $V_{text{CKM}}$ in powers of the small parameter $lambda equiv sintheta_c approx 0.225$:
[
V_{text{CKM}} = begin{pmatrix} V_{ud} & V_{us} & V_{ub} \ V_{cd} & V_{cs} & V_{cb} \ V_{td} & V_{ts} & V_{tb} end{pmatrix} = begin{pmatrix} 1 – frac{lambda^2}{2} & lambda & A lambda^3 (rho – ieta) \ -lambda & 1 – frac{lambda^2}{2} & A lambda^2 \ A lambda^3 (1 – rho – ieta) & -A lambda^2 & 1 end{pmatrix} + mathcal{O}(lambda^4)
]
The unitarity condition $V^dagger V = I$ yields six orthogonality relations in the complex plane. The most famous is the $B$-meson relation:
[
V_{ud} V_{ub}^* + V_{cd} V_{cb}^* + V_{td} V_{tb}^* = 0
]
Dividing by $V_{cd} V_{cb}^*$ constructs the Unitarity Triangle with vertices at $(0, 0)$, $(1, 0)$, and $(bar{rho}, bar{eta})$. Dedicated B-factories (BaBar at SLAC, Belle at KEK, and LHCb at CERN) have measured its angles $alpha, beta, gamma$ with exquisite precision, confirming that the triangle closes perfectly.
4. The Jarlskog Invariant and Sakharov’s Puzzle
Cecilia Jarlskog proved that all CP-violating observables are proportional to a single, rephasing-invariant measure of the Unitarity Triangle’s area—the Jarlskog Invariant $J$:
[
operatorname{Im}(V_{ij} V_{kl} V_{il}^* V_{kj}^*) = J sum_{m,n} varepsilon_{ikm} varepsilon_{jln}, quad J approx A^2 lambda^6 eta approx 3.0 times 10^{-5}
]
While the CKM phase $delta_{CP} approx 65^circ$ fully accounts for laboratory particle decays, the smallness of $J$ multiplied by quark mass hierarchies produces a cosmic baryon asymmetry $eta_B sim 10^{-20}$, billions of times smaller than the observed cosmological value $eta_B^{text{obs}} approx 6 times 10^{-10}$. This disparity proves that additional sources of CP violation must exist in Beyond-the-Standard-Model physics (such as the lepton sector or leptogenesis).
